Welcome to the Botany Bay Family History Society’s new web project where you will find the names of many people from Australia and around the world with a link to the Sutherland Shire.

The Sutherland Shire is an area of historic importance - for many centuries home to the people of the Dharawal language group and where Captain James Cook first made landfall on Australian soil. Sparsely settled, there was no Sutherland Shire until 1906 when municipal control passed into the hands of newly formed Sutherland Shire Council. For many years it remained a semi-rural outpost of Sydney and a holiday destination. The construction of the rail line from Sutherland to Cronulla in 1939 and the post-war development after 1945 led to the dynamic entity that is 'the Shire' today with an area of 370 sq. kilometres (140 square miles) and population approaching 250,000.

This website enables members of the Botany Bay Family History Society to submit and display their family trees in a communal "forest" as well as articles of historical interest. The Botany Bay Connections Genealogy Database contains many names that have a family connection with the Sutherland Shire and surrounding areas.  By searching this database you may discover your ancestors and the connections between families.   Presently in the database there are over 12000 names consisting of over 4500 families and soon you will also be able to find the names of prominent, famous, and not so famous people who have had an influence on the development of the Shire or those who lived in the shire and became well known for their war service or their endeavours in commerce, industry or the arts.

It is envisaged that links to schools & churches, cemeteries, councils are, or will be, on the site as well as details of all the local memorials and other places of interest in the Shire.

At this time many of the pages are still under development with information collated and/or provided by members of the society.

Feel free to browse the site and see what you can find. Any suggestions or even corrections can be forwarded to the Botany Bay Connections Administrator by clicking on the “Suggest” tab on any individual person detail page or by using the “Contact Us” tab on any page.

(Note. As the site is administered by volunteers please do not expect an immediate reply!)

Botany Bay Family History Society was founded in 1984 and was formed to assist members in their family history research by providing a meeting place for genealogists and family historians to pursue their common interests. Our library and research centre is located at the Port Hacking Community Centre, 184 Gannons Road (south) Caringbah in the Sutherland Shire, approximately 30kms south of Sydney in New South Wales Australia.
Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month, excepting January, in the Elouera Room at Tradies, on the Kingsway at Gymea, and feature a Q & A session, and informative and entertaining speakers on a wide variety of subjects of interest to genealogists and family historians. Education classes, including beginner lessons, and special interest groups provide a friendly learning environment for problem solving and advancement of research.
