  Notes	Arthur Henry Davies was born at Bathurst in 1878, the third child of James Davies & Maria King/Davies. As a young man Arthur was apprenticed to the tailoring trade earning a wage of 2/6 a week and he continued in this profession for much of his life. He also became an active member of the Bathurst Volunteer Fire Brigade. On 23rd October 1901, at the Wesleyan Church in William St Bathurst, Arthur married Evelyn Bellden, the daughter of William Hardy Bellden (deceased) and Sarah Rhodes/Bellden. Arthur was 23 and Evelyn 21 at this time. The officiating minister was Rev. Henry Wiles and the witnesses were the bride’s sister, Lilian Amelia Bellden and the groom’s brother James Davies. A notice in the Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal of 23.10.1901 on page 2, reported that the marriage took place at 7:30 in the morning and that “the happy couple after spending a few days in the Metropolis will go to Tasmania to conclude the honeymoon”. The marriage produced four sons and three daughters. The first of these, Dorothy, was born in Bathurst on 4th August 1902. Within the next few years Arthur & Evelyn moved to Carlton, NSW, where a tobacconist shop was purchased. At the rear of the shop were large rooms where Arthur set up his own tailoring business and had a barber to run the shop section. Their second child, John Clement, was born on 22nd February 1905 and was registered in Rockdale. In 1918 Arthur purchased a ten acre poultry farm at Miranda and carried on the business with the help of his sons. All their children thrived on the farm, attending Miranda primary school which was situated on the corner of Kiora Rd and The Kingsway, the present site of the Westfields Shopping Centre . By 1937 all were married and starting their own families. It became a tradition in the family that “Pop” greeted the arrival of each new grandchild with a present of £10 to the proud parents. When he was about 60 Arthur and Evelyn decided to retire from the business. Their oldest son Arthur James & wife Edith purchased the property & continued on with the poultry farm. Arthur purchased a property at Roker St Cronulla which consisted of three flats. They lived in one & rented out the other two. About 1949 Evelyn suffered a stroke and was left partially paralysed and quite incapacitated. So that Evelyn could be better cared for they then moved to live with daughter Dorothy at the Loveday home in Wandella Rd, where Parkside Plaza is now situated. Their third son, my father, Norman Victor, purchased the Roker Street property as an investment. Evelyn died in 1950 & Arthur continued to live with Dorothy till his death at 87. During this time he supplemented his income and used his tailoring skills by doing alterations for local businesses. At one time he made many woollen floor rugs with a latch hook tool and also kept busy with embroidery of all kinds - doilies, table cloths etc which are still cherished by some of his descendants. There is no record of any will having been left by Arthur Henry. As death duties were payable at that time, and Arthur was very shrewd with his money, I believe he disposed of his assets between his children at some time before his death on 25th June 1965. He was cremated at Woronora Crematorium, Sutherland and his ashes were placed in AA Rose Garden 6-0168.
