Queanbeyan Boer War Memorial

Soldiers' Memorial at Queanbeyan unveiled on King'sBirthday1903 by Mrs Granville RYRIE wife of MajorGranville RYRIE... The monument then revealed to view is12ft high, builtof freestone, surmounted by a lamp, thewhole standing on anoctagonal basement. There are fourmarble panels on the fourfaces of the structure. Theinscription on the east panelreads Erected in 1903 As amemorial to the brave men of theQueanbeyan district wholost their lives in defence of theEmpire during the GreatBoer War, 1899-1902. The north panelcontains the names ofthe engagements - Modder River,Bloemfontein, Rensburg,Slingersfontein, Reit, ReliefKimberley, Dransfield,Osfontein, Paardeburg, Klip Drift,Belmont, Graspan. Thesouth panel for the present is leftblank, the idea beinglater on to inscribe the names of allthose from thedistrict who participated in the engagements,whilst theremaining panel contains the names of the fallencomrades.
